Machine Repair Essential: The OTC Silver Slapper-5 lb. Slide Hammer

Attention: Please read the Terms of Use for this site before proceeding.
When you work in the field of CNC machine repair, you will have a need for a slide-hammer. In most cases, I am using my slide-hammer for pin removal (see the Silver Slapper used in a Mori Seiki turret alignment service). Sometimes it comes in handy for a tight-fitting flange or maybe a hydraulic cylinder (like a tool clamp/unclamp cylinder). I’ve seen all kinds of slide-hammers used in the field. For many applications (like the un-rusty, non-deformed 8mm taper-pin in the picture), a small puller does the job. However, when you need to pull a 13mm diameter straight pin out of a hole where it has been for, let’s say, 20 years, or maybe a 10mm lathe turret taper-pin with a big step in it from a crash, a bit more ”convincing” might be needed.
I think the best all-around ”convincer” for these applications may be the “Silver-Slapper” 5 lb. slide hammer from OTC tools. I can’t count the number of times that someone else’s lighter slide hammer has failed to pull a pin, and the Slapper yanked it out successfully. Pretty much when you use the Slapper, whatever you might be pulling is coming out or it’s going to bust something. It’s a devastating tool.
I’ve had this slide-hammers for over 10 years and it’s still in great condition. I bought it off a MAC Tools truck as part of an 8-way kit with all sorts of attachments that I never use for anything. Honestly, for gear-pulling applications on machines, the attachments were always too small or not quite the best thing available for the task.
I’ve checked around on-line and found the 8-way slide hammer kit available at alot of different sites for a little over $100 up to $230.00. I paid $100.00 many years ago for the whole kit. So, I shopped around a little on-line and found just the 5 lb. slide-hammer (with the 5/8-18 threaded end) for 42.50 (as of 14 Feb 2010) and the dent-puller attachment (also 5/8-18 thread) for $12.13 (as of 14 Feb 2010) (total of $54.63 + shipping) at http://www.usatoolwarehouse.com/. That’s really all you will need. Since the Slapper is really designed as an auto-body tool, maybe you can make use of the other attachments if you work on cars or something, but as far as CNC machine repair, you’ll probably just need the slide hammer and the attachment.
The puller attachment has a through-hole into which you can insert a screw that’s needed for a particular task. A long time agao I drilled out the hole in the dent-puller attachment to accomodate an 8mm screw for pulling larger pins. With washers, you can use smaller 3mm or 4mm screws as well.
