CNC Repair Tip #15: Fanuc Control 15iMB On Horizontal Machine with Stuck in Reset
Attention: Please read the Terms of Use for this site before proceeding.
Recently I had a call about about a horizontal machine with a Fanuc 15iMB control. The machine had been relocated and the tech was in the process of getting it back online. The problem he was having was that the machine would power on partially but would not boot up all the way. The only real symptom was the RST (reset) indication at the bottom of the screen. It was stuck in reset.
After checking the status of the reset signal and the external reset, everything appeared to be normal. Fanuc service was called in to check it out.
The reason for the reset condition?
This machine has two ballscrews for the Y and the Z axis, and therefore two servo motors for each. One designated M (Master) and one designated as S (Slave). When the machine was powered on after being relocated, several axes had alarms stating that zero return was needed. I don’t know if the encoder cables had been disconnected, or if the batteries had gone dead. The tech set parameter 1815.4 (APZ) to a 1, in an attempt to “blink” the zero-return and eliminate the alarms. The problem was that 1815.4 was set to 1 for the slave axis as well as the Master. Apparently, on a Fanuc 15iMB, this is a problem. It should have been left at 0. The fact that 1815.4 was a 1 for the slave axis resulted in a RST condition that couldn’t be cleared. In my experience, this is not the case for a 30i or 31i Fanuc control. On these controls, both the Master and Slave axes can be set to 1.
Just another tip for an unusual circumstance that might be useful for you out there in the world.
