CNC Repair Tip #2: Fanuc Alarm 028 (Illegal Plane Select) on Fanuc Control 18iTB
Attention: Please read the Terms of Use for this site before proceeding.
Alarm 028 (Illegal Plane Select) occurred on a MoriSeiki SL-400BMC lathe (with live-tooling) during a G83 drilling canned cycle. The program would run normally until the G83 line was executed.
The 5100 series parameters pertaining to canned cycles were checked and found to be proper.
The cause of the problem was discovered to be the inadvertent setting of the TAPE FORMAT setting (on the handy setting page, under the OFFSET/SETTING key, under the PARAMETER WRITE setting). It had been changed from a 0 to a 1. Resetting to 0 eliminated the 028 alarm in the G83 canned cycle.
